Windows 10 is a surprise #windows10 #Windows10fail

Self Portrait taken with iPad

There are a lot of privacy issues with the new Windows 10 but if you go beyond this it is actually pretty good. A bit like updating from Windows 95 to Windows 98 – at the time this was a massive improvement and I hate to say this…

Windows 10 makes using a Microsoft operating system as easy and as economical as using an iMac (God forgive me).

I uploaded 10 to my workhorse that ran 7. This computer has non available Mac programs on it and is one that I use to create, monitor and SEO client’s websites on. It was always a little sluggish and layout / design retrospective. The new system is quick and looks modern and is app driven – the new workspace is clean and slick.

Am I converted?

Sleeping Car 3539 – Orient Express – Art Deco Washbasin

Sometimes less is more. Art and design that gets straight to the point tends to be more successful than objects or things that are jam packed with irrelevant nonsense. It is far better to pack a killer punch by saying exactly what you mean in the simplest way. Everything you need should be straight in front of you – to understand its function or meaning – tight and compact.

Great real world examples are the 1929 sleeper compartments on the Orient Express.  Each cabin has an original washbasin cabinet, having  hot and cold running water – there is a little storage, mirrors and places to stuff your toiletries, all confined into a space smaller than a single wardrobe – economy of space and design.

Art and Web Design

The construction of a good web page not only depends on great optimization and content – visually the page or pages must look aesthetically pleasing and have intuitive navigation. The similarity between printed magazine design and layout, with web design is very obvious.

The printed word, the newspaper and magazine might be an endangered spices but we still owe a lot to their process of displaying content in a pleasing and informative way.

Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.
