The ant and the word bug amused me

I have decided to recycle some old preview invitations that I sent out for exhibitions over the years.

The ant and the word bug amused me.

The term mixed media has always made me want to reach for the puke bucket – I prefer the expression ‘Combine Painting’ or in this case ‘Combine Drawing’.

I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.

Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references – in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze.

Owning a small business requires a lot of faith and belief, you need to believe in your product (after all it is your baby). To simply survive you require enthusiasm, conviction and self belief. I have all this and much, much more…but it is so tiring!

I’ve had enough! I want a job (maybe not a career) that provides a monthly salary, one that gives me a specific amount of cash flowing into my bank account every month. I want stability in my life and the support from a reliable, proven employer. I want them to pay my income tax and healthcare – I want paid holidays!

Drawing Nude

Life drawing is perhaps something every artist must do – not easy and very frustrating but I had a go.

Going back to the basic skills of drawing is an interesting excursion – a journey I’m not sure I will complete. Drawing a life model for the first time in decades was a bit daunting but old tricks and shortcuts were soon remembered and in many respects drawing is a bit like riding a bicycle.

I have begun to draw again

My previous methodology relied on me subcontracting my creativity to either ‘chance’, allowing the medium to take partial control over the finished image or by letting the computer system deal with my creativity in its prescriptive manner – the program has ways of dealing with commands in a very limit way, hacking the software is the only way of producing images that are different from our everyday visual blitzkrieg of imagery…we are subjected to via the Internet, the printed page and video.

Background info: 1978: I once had a girlfriend called Anne who wore ‘Charlie’ perfume. Every time we came close I sneezed. I was allergic to her bottled smell…

Methodology

Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in color (earthy colors are very plastic like) and modern water-based inks don’t become part of the surface, they … Continue reading ?

Punk design on the web?

The spirit of punk should be revitalized in this prescriptive, common script, widget, cut and paste web design world. Isn’t is about time we forgot the paste bit and cut and rip the internet into shreds and create an adrenaline … Continue reading ?
