Mecca-Digital Hi-Fi – Interview

Below is an email interview with Mecca-Digital Hi-Fi from New York. All interviews are published unedited.

  • How would you discribe your tracks?
Lucid – Dream Soundtrack – Music
  • How important is being in New York to your music?
After Spending many years in Atlanta I realized that I needed to come home to New York ( I’m originally from Spanish Harlem ) – New York has the media capabilities to really help an artists’ career progress. On an artistic level I grew up hearing every type of music you could think of. A walk to the corner Bodega in the 80’s was a lesson in Plena, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, R+B…you name it. I could hear it constantly – And Live!!.. through the church doors, park benches, boom boxes , jeeps, Mtv ..wherever – Ethnically, I’m a typical NYC mutt, a true Nuyorican..LOL ..so all of those musical influences came from within my family as well…Hell, the Mecca Digital name is an ode to Harlem and a famous Harlem spot called Mecca Audio.. I’m just a digitized version of that old school funk!

  • How long have you been making tracks?
I would say that the technology of music production has only caught up to my creativity recently, maybe over the last 2 years. Before that money was a big factor in getting songs created. I’ve been around studios since I was a child and I was an intern for Bob Powers when I was 15 years old- I always had a knack for writing, performing and Djaying, so until very recently I focused on those skills. I was an Mc for an Underground Hip-Hop group called Further 3 Mcs, you can hear me on the Sound Ink Album ‘Krak Attak’ by Cx Kidtronik – Cx and I had a Punk/Rap group called Duese Gangsta- I was also the Mc for Mark Ronson’s first band The Whole Earth Mommas – I’ve always had the calling to produce songs but being on stage performing has opened a nice amount of doors for me..but yeah, I’ve only been playing people tracks that I’ve made since the beginning of this summer, maybe 5-6 months? Technology has opened the floodgates for me..no cutting and splicing? Brilliant!

  • You have lot of different vocalists on your songs, who is the vocalist on ‘The Boss’?
The Boss is actually a Masters At Work tune performed by The Braxton Sisters, as in Toni Braxton’s sisters ( Diana Ross was the first to record it many years ago ) – I sent the music used in my version to a Dj from London named Ben Chesters just to get some feedback..I checked my email and he had created this wonderful remix with my beat and the Braxton vocals – I never expected it – I was floored! it was a major compliment…

  • Where do you see your music going?

Wow..I have a vivid imagination so that’s a tricky question- Right now, I’d like to be a part of your favorite Dj’s arsenal – Music can bring people together…that’s the mission…

About peter

'Death by Sushi' Fish can kill me. When I was very small (maybe 3 or 4 years old) my grandfather, who lost the sight of one eye from a bullet fired by a German sniper (fortunately not a very good one) during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, wiped my face with the corner of his apron, an apron he had used to wipe his filleting knife on. He was a grocery shopkeeper who specialized in wet fish.
