Barfly’s Dreams – Interview

Below is an email interview with Barfly’s Dreams. All interviews are published unedited.

  • Your music reminds me of 1980’s and 90’s underground, experimental, ‘Cassette Culture’ and ‘Mail Art’ scenes – what has influenced your music?

Yes You right! Our music have influenced on 80’s and 90’s and we listened a lot of different stiles and bands from all over the world. My preferred bands, for example, are Queen and Alice in Chains (but I love Ween and Adriano Chelentano) – so, You can see, Peter, there is a big difference between the styles. That is way maybe I propose to my mate Vlad to do something different, something that will pleasure us. “What I see that what I sing”. And we started in the summer of 2007 to do this ‘Cassette Culture’ and ‘Mail Art’ scenes – like You said. Also I have my own project – MyMyLittle.

  • Your recordings sound like they have been recorded on analog tape machines, what do you use to record your tracks?

So, here I can see that You really like (love) Music and probably The Art itself very much! You can understand the sound and it is a long way to do that! Bravo! Sure enough – we did recorded our tracks on old “Technics” tape recorder !!! And we use old Russian electronic machines like guitar FX and Drums Machines, also the vinyls with Russians fairy tales and Communism speakers. It is fun! But not for nothing – we like it so much.

  • What do you enjoy about playing live?

I’ll answer easy this question: Playing live!

  • Is your music structured?

No at all. It is all Improvisation, But before to start we talk what kind of instrument or tune we are going to use in some parts of recording. Some of them are coming when we play and we continue to relish it.

  • Tell me about your releases and up and coming releases?

I am going to put some more of them very soon on my “MML Netlabel”. They are:

Terrasse (2007) (Tape rec)
Transparency Look (2008)(Tape rec)

About peter

'Death by Sushi' Fish can kill me. When I was very small (maybe 3 or 4 years old) my grandfather, who lost the sight of one eye from a bullet fired by a German sniper (fortunately not a very good one) during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, wiped my face with the corner of his apron, an apron he had used to wipe his filleting knife on. He was a grocery shopkeeper who specialized in wet fish.
