This Window/Finish The Story -The Sampler 5
M4tr
Who would have thought that obscure early ’80s UK legends Finish The Story would not only have their own website, but would go on to release a series of ever more wonderful compilations of their work? As an extra treat, they’ve included material by guitarist Peter Bright, recorded under the name This Window. The album opens with Finish The Stories’s 1990 release ‘Trapped In The Hometown’, featuring thin, plucked guitars and Nicola Mumford’s icy vocals, and makes me think of Sad Lovers & Giants if they pulled some talented young lass into the studio one evening. ‘Don’t Think I Can Make It’ is a more recent dance piece by This Window, and, before you barely have time to register it, it segues nicely into ‘Ciao Again’, which spoils itself by ending with a rather silly looped answering machine message. ‘A Moment Longer’ is a far more substantial dish, a minimal synth piece that both chills and sedates, while the strange 48-second ‘Crash87’ is barely worth mentioning apart from the cheeky bit of classical music tacked to the end. Finish The Story comes in again with what may be the cd’s highlight, the gorgeously sorrowful ‘Playing At Life’. ‘Solace’ is thick with layers, a sinister bit of ethereal as made by a delusional paranoid, and following it with the lightness of ‘Like A Sickle Runs Through Cornn’ would be almost blasphemous if it wasn’t so lovely. Then we return to This Window and the hectic electronica of ‘Naked’, followed by the disturbing pseudo-industrial of ‘Nepal’. We close with Finish The Story’s short and sweet ‘Ripples In Waterâ’. It doesn’t always work together, and I’d love to see a full cd of just Finish The Story material released, but this is an excellent taste of one of the most unique bands I’ve ever heard. Make this new year special. Buy this.
