Insane from Belgium – Alain Neffe

Alain Neffe is probably one of the most influential ‘cassette underground’ people around, his Belgian label Insane released many of the 1980’s heroes of the home taping and mail art scenes. Here is an opportunity to get a collectors edition of some of his projects from www.eetapes.be.

Bene Gesserit – ‘A High, Happy, Perverse And Cynical Cry Of Joy…’ (Vinyl, LP) released in 1985 is one of my favorite releases from Insane and two tracks appear on this new release.

Details of release are below

‘The Insanely Happy EP’ various artists – 7″ep | 33rpm | 18:00 | 250 copies – date of release: 7 February 2011
A collection of vintage 80s tracks by various Insane groups from Belgium, compiled by Alain Neffe.
Four projects featuring Neffe himself in different disguises: Pseudo Code, Human Dance, Subject and Bene Gesserit, and one track by M.A.L., long-time Insane collaborator.
This vinyl ep contains 6 tracks of which 4 are never released before. Both Bene Gesserit tracks are taken from their classic LP on Insane. The first 85 copies are hand numbered and contain 2 extra photographs.
Mailorders can buy these on a 1:4 basis (every order of 4 copies will include 1 handnumbered copy, as long as stock lasts….)
Only 200 copies of the total edition will be available from our office, so please act fast!

Have you tried buying mp3s from Amazon?
Amazon MP3 offers millions of songs and albums from your various artists in most genres. The downloads are all in MP3 format, which means they can play on any digital media player. Songs from Amazon MP3 can be played on any MP3-capable device, including iPods™, Zunes™, Zens™, iPhones™, RAZRs™, BlackBerrys™, and most media-enabled mobile phones.
The downloaded tracks are free of DRM (digital rights management) software, which means you can, play them on all your computers, transfer them to all your mp3 compatable devices, and burn your songs to CDs. Songs are encoded at high quality 256 kbps – sounds like a good deal to me.

We are in the process of helping to re-design http://www.m4tr.co.uk. There are plans to incorporate a section dedicated to independent artist who have released their music on iTunes, Amazon etc. We have become increasingly aware of the bias ‘mainstream acts have on all commercial download sites. If you send m4tr your Amazon and iTunes links to your release(s) they will incorporate into a dedicated section on their site.

Contact them via M4tr.co.uk or below.

People are constantly looking for free promotions from businesses and are no longer prepared to pay a fare price for things. We have appeared to embraced the ‘something for nothing’ culture  and are consequently (probably) destroying the fundamental laws of capitalism. If you can get everything for free then how do we make money?
Something for nothing is a part of marketing, a way to trap your client into a product, a culture or a brand, to entice them or convince them to buy your related products. Read more…
The music industry has been destroyed by this something for nothing culture, with albums being given away free. It can be argued that this has made the music industry more democratic, enabling individual musicians and artist to compete in the free download market. However, this surge for free content has diluted the industry, the purse is getting empty so artists are not getting paid a fair return for their efforts. It gets worse – websites that delivered free content (and some paid) are now disappearing as the general public now only downloaded the free stuff and not the paid tracks.  With the demise of the 7digital indiestore service shutting down on in September 2010 an avenue for the democratic production of paid for and free downloads by independent artists has closed. There are dozens of  other viable alternatives for free mp3 downloads out there but for how long?

Festival update

I have been busy working this year’s West Buckland Festival – it is going to be bigger and better than last year.

We have had interest from unsigned bands to play (see comment ). We haven’t got plans to extend the festival this year but if there is interest then maybe it is something the committee might consider  for next time. Please leave a comment either here or on the festival website if you have an opinion.
