My heroes have grown old with me or they have died – maybe their death has been a way to freeze time, stop the aging process – not only for them but for me also?

Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969, became the second astronaut to walk on the moon and the first to spacewalk. According to different NASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the moon’s surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronauts inside the compact lunar landing module, it was easier for the commander, Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft.

‘Peter’s exhibition was inspired by iconic images he used when he was at art school in the 70s on the theme of Beauty and the Beast – inc Sid and Nancy and Guy the Gorilla! – and I think the results are really bold and impactful.’

I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.

Guy the Gorilla (May 30, 1946 – 1978) was a Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) which was London Zoo‘s famous resident, something of a celebrity in the 1960s–70s and was often profiled on kids TV shows and natural history productions. Guy the Gorilla was one of London Zoo’s best-loved animals.He arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1947,  Guy Fawkes Night, hence his name. He was a tiny baby, weighing just 23 lb (10 kg) and holding a small tin hot-water bottle.

Due to European regulations the Orient Express has to change engines in every country it enters, these regulations also prevent steam powered engines from being used.

From Innsbruck train station you can see the ski jump ramp used in the IX Olympic Winter Games (from January 29 to February 9, 1964). The games included 1091 athletes from 36 nations, and the Olympic Torch was carried by Joseph Rieder,  a former alpine skier who had participated in the 1956 Winter Olympics.

In 1969 I stood at the bottom of the ski jump ramp – it is huge!

Sometimes less is more. Art and design that gets straight to the point tends to be more successful than objects or things that are jam packed with irrelevant nonsense. It is far better to pack a killer punch by saying exactly what you mean in the simplest way. Everything you need should be straight in front of you – to understand its function or meaning – tight and compact.

Great real world examples are the 1929 sleeper compartments on the Orient Express.  Each cabin has an original washbasin cabinet, having  hot and cold running water – there is a little storage, mirrors and places to stuff your toiletries, all confined into a space smaller than a single wardrobe – economy of space and design.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a private luxury train service that travels from London to Venice. Traveling on the Orient Express across Europe is a romantic, nostalgic and luxurious experience.

The craftsmanship that went into creating the original carriages would be very difficult to replicate – inlaid wood, frosted glass reliefs and chromed fittings. These wonderfully engineered pieces of railway rolling stock date back to the 1920s and 1930s. The whole ensemble oozes history.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

The original company was founded by James Sherwood of Kentucky, USA, in 1982; five years earlier, in 1977, he had bought two of the original carriages at auction when the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits withdrew from the Orient Express service, passing the service on to the national railways of France, Germany, and Austria. Over the next few years, Sherwood spent a total of $16 million purchasing 35 sleeper, restaurant and Pullman carriages. On 25 May 1982, the first London-Venice run was made.

It is currently owned by Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. The company owns 50 luxury hotels, restaurants, tourist trains and river cruises in 24 countries.

Cassette Culture was an offshoot of the mail art movement of the 1970s and 1980s, it emerged from the DIY ethic of punk. Compact Cassettes, were the way that home recording artists distributed their ART. Cassettes consisted of two miniature spools, between which magnetically coated plastic tape was transported. In the UK cassette culture was born during the post-punk period, 1978–1984, extending through the late ’80s and into the ’90s.
