Peter Bright – Exhibition

Peter Bright - Artist

In preparation for an exhibition in June I have begun to draw again. My previous methodology relied on me subcontracting my creativity to either ‘chance’, allowing the medium to take partial control over the finished image or by letting the computer system deal with my creativity in its prescriptive manner – the program has ways of dealing with commands in a very limited way, hacking the software is the only way of producing images that are different from our everyday visual blitzkrieg of imagery…we are subjected to via the Internet, the printed page and video.

“Going back to the basic skills of drawing is an interesting excursion – a journey I’m not sure I will complete. Drawing a life model for the first times in decades was a bit daunting but old tricks and shortcuts were soon remembered and in many respects drawing is a bit like riding a bicycle.”

Ref. (actually it is bullshit)

Robert Rauschenberg was a massive influence on my painting, printing and music. Images (and sounds) that are arbitrarily spliced together in an apparent random manner will, when juxtaposed against each other, create a narrative. This meshing together of unrelated imagery may appear to be arbitrary but the intellectual decision making that goes with the process is absolutely phenomenal. It is therefore unrealistic to expect the uneducated masses to view these images as ‘real art’. The birth of Photoshop has enabled everybody to create ‘non-intellectual’ versions of Rauchenberg (and Warhol) – only the educated truly understand.
Taken from blurb of the show at Broomhill (June 2010)

Notes:

  • Fingerprints on white borders – nightmare on a short print run. A fingerprint is an impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger = fingerprints are the traces of an impression from the friction ridges of any part of a human hand. Impressions of fingerprints may be left behind on a surface by the natural secretions of sweat from the eccrine glands that are present in friction ridge skin, or they may be made by ink or other substances transferred from the peaks of friction ridges on the skin to a relatively smooth surface such as a fingerprint card. Fingerprints records normally contain impressions from the pad on the last joint of fingers and thumbs, although fingerprint cards also typically record portions of lower joint areas of the fingers.
  • Action Painting – Pollock. Print dribbled paint

Saint Austell

Peter Bright - Saint Austell

I have begun a series of prints called “Saint Austell” –  from the  6th century – Confessor and disciple of St. Newman of Cornwall, England. Modern scholars believe that Austell was a woman named Hoystill, a daughter of Brychan of Wales. Feastday: June 28.

Christianity with its unchangeable principles, and without misjudging the justifiable demands of the age, undertakes to guide the woman movement also into the right path. The life-task of woman is a double one.

  • As an individual woman has the high destiny obligatory upon every human being of acquiring moral perfection.
  • As a member of the human race woman is called in union with man to represent humanity and to develop it on all sides.

Festival update

I have been busy working this year’s West Buckland Festival – it is going to be bigger and better than last year.

We have had interest from unsigned bands to play (see comment ). We haven’t got plans to extend the festival this year but if there is interest then maybe it is something the committee might consider  for next time. Please leave a comment either here or on the festival website if you have an opinion.

The Festival will start on Thursday 8th and end on the late evening of Sunday 11th September 2011
Get yourself noticed – place a banner advert on this site for twelve months – for as little as £10.00. The money generated by this website will be added to the funds raised by the festival whose purpose is to provide music, art and entertainment for the people of North Devon. Money raised is divided between a Charity or Charities chosen by the Festival Committee and the upkeep of St Peter’s Church, West Buckland.

Do you want 2 paintings for £35.00?

Found these two paintings in storage does anybody want them both for £35.00 (plus postage and packing)? I need to clear out our storage units. These images are made using cardboard stencils and refer to garden design….as an asthmatic gardens make me wheeze….even in small doses plant life triggers allergic reactions….even small plants…. Bonsai is not an option. Both have been exhibited and were painted in 2004 and have the exterior dimensions of 360 x 310 mm the frame including  frame. Materials = Acrylic, Oil and commercial paint mixed with cod liver oil (if  I drank Cod Liver Oil I would probably die as I am extremely allergic to fish) – marker pens on wooden frame.

I have tried to paint ‘en plein air’ but as soon as  I  erect my easel I fall prey to a asthma attacks. After several puffs of Ventolin I get over it but the urge to paint what I see disappears.

Bonsai for Asthmatics

Broomhill Art Hotel, Muddiford

Summer exhibition – ‘The Small Picture Show’ 5th June – 4th July 2004

What is Bonsai?

For the viewer contemplation is the primary purpose of bonsai  and the execution  of effort and ingenuity for the grower (creator).  In contrast with other plant cultivation practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food, for medicine, or for creating gardens or landscapes. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees in a single container and the aesthetics of the object. A bit like painting really
