Igor Jovanovic (Lezet) – Interview

Below is an email interview with Igor Jovanovic. All interviews are published unedited.
  • After listening to you tracks on MySpace I came away thinking that I had been listening to improvised jazz, how would you describe your music?

I’d probably call it “experimental” music, but there’s a lot of improvised jazz sounds around.I’ve always been a true admirer of “the 20th century classical music” and “freejazz/improvisational jazz/free improvisation” so I guess my musical endeavors inevitably head in these directions.I’m influenced by many other genres as well: RiO/avant-prog,electronica,tango nuevo,freak-folk,jazz-death metal&math rock/core,fusion&post-bop jazz etc, cartoon music etc.

  • You collaborate with different artists, how important is working with other people?

It’s like making music with each new collaborator widens my perspective and my view of music.Lezet was originally intended to be a “real band” , an improvisational outfit/collective, but here in Serbia the potential members were either involved in other projects or weren’t simply interested in doing this kind of music. So working with other people facilitated this band-like surrounding I craved for …The “Meld” series of albums were made in this way and I considered them the most valuable releases I did so far.

  • You have had several releases, which one do you think best represents your ‘art’?

I think Lezet’s “true” musical “identity” may be best represented by piano albums like “Din”and “Not Of The Loins”,but any other album will do fine.

  • Are you involved with any new projects at the moment?

I finished a collaborative album with a Norwegian noise icon Lasse Marhaug (due in September as a net release through Clinical Archives netlabel(Russia)) .Another collaboration with several great artists (Topi Reta(Argentina),Orgasm Denial (Hong Kong), Koroiev (Spain) and Koobaatoo Asparagus (USA)) is due on Lo-Fi Sci-Fi Records(Germany)soon. An EP of prepared piano pieces will come out in October as well. Plus a “Meld5” album of collaborations and remixes is under way…

  • Do you have a specific direction to take your music in or are just happy to leave everything to chance?
I’d like to make Lezet into a real open-minded collective of musicians that would define new directions for Lezet, and I think the new paths will be a set of both intentional and chance outcomes.

About peter

'Death by Sushi' Fish can kill me. When I was very small (maybe 3 or 4 years old) my grandfather, who lost the sight of one eye from a bullet fired by a German sniper (fortunately not a very good one) during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, wiped my face with the corner of his apron, an apron he had used to wipe his filleting knife on. He was a grocery shopkeeper who specialized in wet fish.
